Falasarna is located in the western part of the island of Crete / Greece. It is an area of unique natural beauty that belongs to 'NATURA 2000' network namely Imeri kai Agria Gramvoussa - Tigani kai Falasarna - Pontikonisi, Ormos Livadi - Viglia (code of GR4340001). The study area is contradicting in terms of landscape regime and economic activity. Falasarna is an economically developed tourist zone in the north-west of Chania prefecture. On the one hand, due to its extensive sandy beaches, the area has become a tourist attraction. On the other hand, extensive agriculture has been developed in the form of large large-scale houses (southern part). The same time the ruins of ancient Roman city Falasarna lie to the north. Low-impact tourist facilities can be found in the small inland villages in the south of the peninsula.

Objectives and expected activities: A broad baseline of archaeological and environmental data is available for the whole area. In the recent past, the surrounding area relied more on agriculture than tourism. As a result, the beach was undeveloped and no big hotels or resorts were in its vicinity. Only small villages and many greenhouses dotted the fields. In the last years this seems to gradually change due to the new established beach bars, hotels, sun beds etc. that have changed the landscape gradually.
